Jenny's Bio... Although I come from a literature and creative writing background, when I started working on my Ph.D. in English, I found that I needed a creative outlet that didn't require lots of time and concentration. Writing, although it's an important part of my life, requires that I sink into myself for a while, something that I can't do during semesters of studying and teaching. I found knitting to be the outlet I needed. Because they are small, don't need a pattern, and can contain bright and unusual color combinations, socks become my project of choice. I began to crave certain qualities in a sock yarn as well as color combinations that weren't available. I began to dye my own sock yarn. I found that I really enjoyed dyeing yarn and that coming up with new and arresting color combinations gave a much-needed empirical dimension to my otherwise mental creative work. I found that the way I think up images in my poems and prose fused with the way I dream up my colorways. My writing and dyeing seem to be moved by mood and the expression of that mood; there seems to be an undercurrent to physical objects that meshes with something transcendental--dyeing yarn helps me to express these ideas when I can't find the time to write.
